What to Look for Before Buying Kids Luggage

As someone who has traveled with children, I know how important it is to have the right luggage for them. Kids’ luggage can be a great way to get your child excited about travel and give them a sense of independence.

However, it’s essential to choose the right luggage that is both functional and age-appropriate. Thus, I have rounded up key factors to consider before getting one.

Here are the following:

1. Size

When it comes to choosing the right size for your child’s luggage, it’s important to consider their age and height. A suitcase that is too large can be heavy and cumbersome for a young child to carry, while one that is too small may not be able to fit all of their essentials.

If your child is a toddler or preschooler, consider a small carry-on size luggage that they can easily manage. For elementary school-aged children, you can opt for a medium sized luggage. Teenagers may require larger luggage, but it’s important to ensure that the suitcase is still easy for them to manage.

2. Design

As a parent, I understand that the design of my child’s luggage is important to them. Kids love luggage that is fun and colorful, and having a design that aligns with their interests can make them more invested in their travel experience. It’s not just about the aesthetics, but also about making it easier for my child to spot their luggage among the sea of bags at airports or train stations.

Many luggage brands offer suitcases with popular cartoon characters, superhero themes, or animal prints that my child would love. I can also find luggage with bright colors or unique patterns that my child will be excited about. If my child has a favorite character or interest, I can get a luggage that reflects it.

3. Weight

A lightweight suitcase is essential, as it can be challenging for a child to manage a heavy suitcase on their own. If your child needs to carry their luggage themselves, a lightweight suitcase can make a big difference in their comfort and ease of use.

Luggage made with lightweight materials like nylon or polycarbonate can be a good option to consider. It’s also a good idea to check the weight of the suitcase before purchasing it to ensure that it’s not too heavy for your child to carry.

4. Durability

Choosing a durable suitcase can save you money in the long run, as you won’t have to replace it after every trip. It’s worth investing in a high-quality, durable suitcase that can withstand the rigors of travel and keep your child’s belongings safe and secure.

It’s important to choose a suitcase made with sturdy materials that can handle wear and tear, so it lasts for many trips to come. Look for luggages with reinforced corners and edges, high-quality zippers,  sturdy handles, and a strong frame as these factors increase the durability and longevity of the suitcase.

5. Wheels and Retractable Handles

When it comes to the wheels themselves, I always look for sturdy, high-quality wheels that can handle rough terrain and long distances. Luggage with wheels made of durable materials like rubber or polyurethane can be a good option to consider.

Aside from that, I prefer luggage with retractable handles that can be adjusted to the right height for my child. This allows them to pull their suitcase comfortably without having to strain their arms or shoulders. Through these, I can ensure that my child’s travel experience is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

6. Compartment

Compartments that keep their belongings organized and easily accessible. Thus, I look for luggage with at least two or three compartments, with each compartment serving a specific purpose.

For example, a main compartment for clothes, a smaller compartment for shoes or toiletries, and perhaps an exterior pocket for snacks or small toys. Overall, not only does having multiple compartments help to keep things organized, but it also ensures that everything fits neatly into the suitcase.

Wrapping Up

Choosing the right kids’ luggage is an important aspect of family travel that can significantly impact the overall experience. By keeping in mind the factors outlined in this article and choosing a suitcase that suits our family’s needs, we can ensure that our children have a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience every time.
